Purpose Formula

3/27/2020

Happy Monday!

Prior to the many changes that our world continues to face on a daily basis; we began holding LIVE and a "Virtual Book Club".   A separate blog post will be forthcoming; going over Chapters 3 and 4 of the book.  Until then, please find items from our beginning discussions as stated below. May you continue to thrive wherever you are!

One of the points discussed and requested is the Life Purpose Formula found in Chapter 1 of "Chronically Well".  Do note that there are a variety of ways, methods and purpose formulas offered by Career / Life Coaches.  The below is my personal adjusted process based upon years of discussion and self discovery.

1.  First ask yourself, what drives your heart? Where is your heart connection? What drives your joy?

2.  What do you see as an injustice? What would you like to change or what has been a source of pain for you? Do not be afraid to truly experience your pain and triumphs.  Some people don't like to address pain because it brings up something that they have to process. But please know, it is worth working through - if I hadn't addressed my pain, I wouldn't be here today, assisting others.

3.  Identify what sets you apart from another.  What comes naturally to you?  What are your unique talents and gifts?

4.  Now think of the others around you that you would like to connect with and impact.  Know your target audience.  Who do you desire to help? Are you interested in assisting children, the impoverished, the disabled, those in prison, abused women, etc?

Now that you have identified who you are, what you want or are passionate about / called to do, take steps 1 and 3 to assist those you are assigned to in this life (step 4) overcome or conquer step 2.

We each hold a life purpose, a calling to fulfill.  The vehicle to fulfill that purpose will change as do the seasons in our life.

My dear reader, I want you to know that you aren't alone - chronic is all around us. Everyone has something that's chronic in their life, it's not just limited to illness.  It can go deeper than just the physical and can include mental, emotional and spiritual wounds which unfortunately affects the physical as well.

Whether you experience chronic illness, chronic judgment, chronic anger, chronic hate in your heart, chronic adultery, chronic drinking or chronic lying, just to name a few you CAN change your course.

20/20 with Dr. Lynne Facing the Holidays with Chronic Illness

Q: How can each person thrive every day; especially as we entire a time when people may feel like the are able to tell us what to do, how to do it [through the Holiday Season] absent acceptance of our journey?  How may we own our space and own it well?

Dr. Lynne:  So much of that is standing in your own power. What I’ve seen in people is, that is a process.  That typically starts when you are young and more and more people step into that when they are older.   It’s seen more so in ones 50’s.

The other component though - is Everything is a choice. And I know there are parts of the mind that say, “well this isn’t and this isn’t” so:

When you can’t control the fact that you’re facing another Drs appointment or another diagnoses what you can choose is HOW you’re going to face it so are you:

1 - Going to take somebody else with you? Because sometimes that’s just what we need

2 - Are you going to get down on your knees before you go and surrender it ALL to a higher power because you just can’t carry it all yourself

OR

3 - are you going to use the “Act as IF” thing and that is a really good one.  That is a recovery  concept - ACT AS IT -

You go into work and you act as if you’re doing okay. And when people ask how you’re doing you say, “I AM great, how are you?”.

That concept can really carry you. In fact sometimes it can convince yourself that you really are doing okay.

Question from participant:

Q: Difference between life coach and counselor in getting through chronic illness, Holidays, life etc

Dr. Lynne: therapists or skilled therapists let you be yourself and then they ask questions or invite you to explore and as you share; if they are skilled that leads you to insights into yourself.  Sometimes they will give you information. E.g. They help you tune into that pain in your shoulder is about carry the weight of the world upon your shoulders.  Maybe you have that kind of disposition so then they would talk to you and explore that with you.  They do tend to give homework.  It is an exploratory kind of conversation; at least with the better ones.  There are some [therapists] who just give you a diagnosis, "Here’s what you have to do about and I’ll see you month", and those aren’t the type to go back to.  It’s a person who makes you feel cared about, is interested in you, they are paying attention to you and you feel heard and affirmed.  Then you know you’re with someone who might be able to help you.

Coaches and therapists are very different.  Then psychologists are another level because they can give diagnoses as can psychiatrists who can give diagnoses and medication.

There are distinct differences.

My specialty is in recovery in addictions theory. It’s pretty broad now that it includes gambling, compulsive shopping, sex addictions and so forth.  It’s gotten to be pretty broad.

Regarding the holidays again.  Sometimes the place that we are in is so acute that
people use medications through a psychiatrist or a medical doctor can do it too, to get through the Holidays because it is such an intense time.  So, some people do that.  And, I do very much believe though the thought that the more you work on yourself and use a therapist, a healer, a journal, a spiritual practice, a support group, the better that it gets.  And I do talk about that personally because there was a time in the early 80's that my depression was so bad that I could hardly stand the holidays.  But as my life changed and I did the work to release the grief; therefore, the depression lightened up then the Holidays are awesome now.  They are really fun!  It was a process; It was a healing process. But I always came back and said more. Okay! Like, I’m doing great at work but my relationships with my girlfriends aren’t what I want so how do I address that and on and on and on. So, I just kept with the personal growth.  Now, I look forward to the Holidays.  I think everybody can have a that.

Q: When people deal with multiple things.  For instance when people are layered.  There may be chronic illness or multiple chronic illness, lack of support, acceptance. Perhaps one cannot eat or physicians aren’t supportive.  What happens when someone tries to tackle everything at one time.  How does one start or where do we start?

Dr. Lynne:  Where do you put your focus? If I am focusing on “I don’t get enough” then I am going to experience “I’m not getting enough”. If I focus on “what can I do for others”, “how do I make their Holiday enjoyable”; all kinds of fun things will happen! So, I thought of going to a party (now, I don’t have all of the illnesses you’re talking about for example) yet I’m focusing on losing weight and I don’t want to go and eat all of that stuff. Most of it I don’t eat anyway because it makes me feel horrible.  I go and they have all of their foods. Well, I bring a dish that is a nutritious, lightweight, vegetable based treat. I can have that and maybe something they have.  I focus on what I CAN have and then I focus on the people.  Because It’s not about the food.  Halloween might be a lot about the food but it’s also about the fun.  It’s about the delight of watching children, right? I buy candy for Halloween that I don’t like that children do like. That way, when the children come to the door I thoroughly enjoy talking to their parents and appreciating their costumes.  It makes me so happy.  That’s how I deal with that. I don’t eat their candy.

I set that evening up for success.  That’s one.

For Thanksgiving: when they are taking all of those pies.  Maybe I would bring a sugar free pie.  Maybe I say I wouldn’t have pie.  I make a plan in advance. Plan what you can do and focus on the positive of what you can have. Focus on the people.

Sit at the children’s table at Thanksgiving.  Ask them to tell you a few jokes.  Sit with a few of the older people for a bit.  Older people often times feel like they aren’t heard.

When we take the attention off of ourselves and we focus on what we can be and do for others then everything shifts.  We walk out at the end of the evening with a difference perspective.  It changes everything!

Host: A dear friend of mine says that she enjoys the Holiday Season with her cup of tea sitting in her big comfy chair knowing she cannot eat yet loves watching everyone else enjoying themselves.  She does this as opposed to making everyone else miserable because of what she cannot do. She takes joy in watching others do as she learns and participates in the joy of others.

Dr. Lynne: Take a look at those around you and enjoy the gift of others.

Dr. Lynne: Be of service.  Whoever is home may need help.  Do the dishes or set the table.  Allow them to eat too since they have been busy making the meal all day.

Children can read to you. They want to share their stuff with you.  Let them show you their favorite game even if you feel they waste too much time on it.  It is the holiday.  Focus on the joy they are having and you will feel the joy too.

Q: In the “in between” of each Holiday, Birthday or other events (New Year’s, Mother’s Day, Summer). What do you suggest one can do to keep oneself filled up?

Dr. Lynne: When your cup is so full it overflows and you have enough to give away as opposed to 'there is a hole and nothing is left for you or to give away'.

Even if or when people come to you - know you have something of value; when people DO come to you.  You have worth!

New interpretation of when people come to you: You do have something to offer to others.  When we feel our gratitude things shift.  That gratitude can even be “Thank God I am not alone all the time”.  Elderly people are often alone just waiting for people to come by.  If people are just taking from you then do set a boundary.  If people only come to you for money then decide and set a boundary.  Always setting boundaries.

How to get through the in between times:

  1. Look at your self talk.  What do you say to yourself in your head.

     2. Look at your Self care.  Desertjewel.org and grab the article “3 ways to heal yourself” for FREE

1: SELF TALK

Within the article under Self Talk it asks you to look at your self talk for example: “men are only interested in only one thing”.  If you keep telling yourself that then you aren’t going to have pleasant experiences with men.  Or “I go to church but no one seems to want to talk to me”.  Self talk could change to, “I’m going to church and people are going to talk to me”, “I’m going to serve on a committee”.

Self talk: “That was stupid, I can’t believe I did that”.  Try, “Oh that was silly, I can chuckle about that”.

We have to lighten up and have less judgment of self.

It has to be a really conscious process.  In the beginning, It was hard for me to hear how I was speaking to myself.  Eventually, I got pretty good at it and a lot of it I laugh at now.  It is just ridiculous because I see us as really precious beings.  No matter what wounding we have there is still a precious being in there and you ARE BEAUTIFUL.

It doesn’t matter the color of the skin, the size of the body or even the personality. Think of those grumpier people that are harder to like, they’re still beautiful inside because we are the same thing inside - we are spirit.

2: SELF CARE

What is your favorite self care activity?

It can be sleeping in, a nap, buying vitamins as opposed to pizza.

Whatever feeds your soul and your body.  Meditations, pleasant music are examples.

With Halloween coming up instead of watching a scary movie; watch a movie for kids.

Dr Lynne: I like to, with the Holidays, take a child to see a play.  Take a family member (when I taught school) take the class to see the Nutcracker.  They had such a great time.   One of my old favorites is watching Jerry Lewis movies.

Host:  So books, movies, time to yourself, serving others not really deflects but puts things into perspective. I like to say that in your giving you wind up getting filled back up as well.  You wind up getting what you need.

Dr. Lynne: Yes! You do. It does fill up your cup. You do deserve to feel good about yourself.  All this stuff you have in your head about not being good enough, not being worthy enough. It’s just stuff we’ve picked up and it’s not even true.  We have to start the process to change that and let that go. That’s where it comes back to coaches, journaling, therapists, a relationship with a minister who really speaks to you.

Understanding who we really are as opposed to looking at a symptom truly helps us get through seasons, holidays and relating with each other.

I was in an exercise class 30 years ago and there was a women in the back and she was short and a bit old and I was thinking isn’t that who I want to be? A woman in her 70’s who is a “go getter”.  I have to take those steps to become that.  It’s not going to happen overnight.  When we ruminate, when we dwell we keep ourselves stuck.  When we go to the internet and look up “how to become unstuck”, “how to stop self sabotaging”, or “how to change my perspective” and I had an example -

I got married really young and got divorced shortly thereafter.  That I felt really badly about for awhile until my perspective changed and what it changed to was, “Thank God for that young man who wanted to marry me, it got me out of my parents alcoholic, very unpleasant home. It gave me an opportunity to step out of my life and another year and we were divorced". And I’m appreciating him as the person who helped me get out of that home and onto my own two feet.  I did go back and lived in my parents home for 1 month and thought wow! What was I thinking, I can be on my own. I can do this.  Instead of being angry with him because he wasnt’ the husband I would have liked to have had  I appreciate him for being the one who helped me grow up into my own freedom.  Looking for the gift.

What is the gift in _________________ ?

Look for the gift.  It is there. It may take a while but it is there.

There is a book called “The artists way”.  It suggests three pages of journaling a day.  I do one.  Put your thoughts, your pain on paper.  It gets it out of your heart and your head.  Sometimes you get insights as well.  That is what you are looking for... Insights!

We've been through and asked for it all!

The power of the Question holds so much IF and WHEN we choose to allow ourselves to:

⭐️ 1: Sit with ourselves in the moment to unravel what appears to be chaotic, stress-filled, perplexing and write down the questions needing to be asked.

⭐️ 2: Shut out the noise! The moments we “turn it down” are often the times when the answers come; even without us asking. The simple fact is that they [answers] have and are always there - waiting for us to be present and be found in that place of knowing.

⭐️ 3: IF an answer has not presented itself to you then perhaps it isn’t TIME yet. Be patient. Trust. Wait. Is there ever a reason to rush? If so, then why? Who is doing the rushing and / or is this party healthy for the situation at hand? Will any of it bring benefit as a part of your “whole-istic” living plan?
⭐️
4: Plan & Prepare: Is the place where you are right now the very place you have been preparing for; even if it appears to be unsettling or experiencing any “dis-ease”? This word disease is not only in the sense of the body.

Disease BY DEFINITION STATES:

* a particular quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people *

Is what you are going through or where you are affecting not only you but also a GROUP of people? If so, then ASK, sit absent noise, wait and listen
🔑
⭐️ 5: Allow all that is to be; to be. It sounds simple doesn’t it? Well it is! Be still and KNOW with the old “faith without works is dead” adage. Yes, be still and know. Know that you are exactly where you need to be and that everything is already alight. Then couple your belief system with the ACTION of your knowing. The knowledge and wisdom pertaining to your situation. That knowledge may be to wait. It may be to DO something or nothing at all. Only you have the answer for you. NO ONE else has it for you; not even your physicians. They have degrees and eduction wrapped in information yet even still a degreed doctor obtained their license with a “C”; not always top of their class!

And so, in much love for each one reading we offer this:

🔑 You know you best. You know your journey absent judgment and those around you. You know who you need to disconnect from so newness may be allowed into your space. You KNOW which words are harmful and helpful. You KNOW when noise is too loud to hear any thing or any one. It is your journey; your life and your wellness.

May you be all that you are called to be every day of your life in much health and totality as you have been created to be. Allow not another to tell you otherwise. KEEP YOUR POWER!

You are treasured, cherished and loved.

Growth Up!

4/10/2018

Change is oh so good...right?

Of course it is, when it's happening for all of the right reasons, at the right time and when the "growth process" is going well and it's smooth sailing! Wouldn't it be grande if that's how life handed us all of our cards at once? Well, the thing about life is that it is quite the opposite and all that it encompasses is just the same. The one consistent thing is change!

I am one of those peculiar people who embrace and even crave change along with a hearty helping of balance. For the "well" or even the average person change may be an easy process and a part of every day life.  They wake up, get dressed and go about the day as if any other day.  Perhaps a child in school in early years, happily playing with friends and vying for the newest video game or social media craze thus changing with the styles in clothing or tech data.  Maybe college or career age and growing into their own strengths as they make their mark upon the world in business, healthcare, education or philanthropic efforts while changing eating and workout habits to stay healthy; fully able to sustain the new demands of life / work balance.

For those who have entered the world of chronic illness change can seem insurmountable, daunting and at first extremely uncertain.  The path of chronic illness; chronic pain and what appears to be the loss of what "was" may not appear to be "change" at all. In the beginning stages of this journey it may not look like anything.  I know because I have been in that exact position. It took me time to acknowledge, embrace and reframe the unknown into change and then growth. It is the very reason why we are here today as a non profit organization in expansion from our original vision with a passion like never before.

Years ago we started Warrior Wednesday as a blog to share the stories of fellow warriors with chronic and incurable illness(es) and we will always share as you wish to remit your journeys.  Over time we ebbed and flowed back into my background as a certified coach to remind every person we come in contact with that they have a purpose and a plan; they have a truth within them unique to only one.  Illness cannot take that away.  I am no more a car by sitting in my garage than I am an incurable illness by a document handed to me by my physician. I am so much more! You are MORE!

Our mission and vision is total overall wellness through as many avenues and partnerships as we can offer to you and as much as you are willing to receive. We are not physicians yet we can encourage, love on, pour into, lift up and elevate you to your A-HA moment of freedom emotionally, mentally, spiritually and offer advocacy through philanthropy as we always have.  We can grow through what we go through.  Change in inevitable.  It will come; what will we do with it when it does? Are we grounded? Are we centered? Do we have the tools that we need? Have we set healthy boundaries for ourselves and others? Are we willing to release in order to gain? The power of questions is a beautiful avenue to truth and the truth truly does set us free.

We hope you will join us for Warrior Wednesday the first or last Wednesday of each month. We have a wonderful time of growth, powerful discussions and gift giving. If you feel lost, left alone or are in need of some love then we are here for you. No one should journey alone. Love is free and we will gladly give it.  There is HOPE - Help Others Prosper Everyday - here.

You are treasured, cherished and loved,

#Warrior #Wednesday: Hold on to Hope

11/29/2017

Recently, we held an empowering LIVE event within our community filled with tools to set us up for a healthy mindset, clean out our emotional closet and rebalance our wheel of life.  When living with chronic illness it is imperative to surround ourselves with those who promote the good in us simply because the physical struggle can be overwhelming on any given day.  Often times, these days can turn into weeks or even months.

Any time we come before you and speak about balance, mindfulness or coaching we encourage you to remember all that you are and the marvelous gift you are to this world.  Waking up every morning and vying for an unrealistically "positive" life isn't what we are aiming for, although an attitude of gratitude does shift your perspective in any situation.  Where you find your personal freedom or your own "A-HA" moment is in the Acknowledgment, the Awareness of who you are and where you are and then Embracing you, your surroundings and all that you have to offer while asking important questions that pertain to your own life and circumstances.  The practice of asking questions is a powerful tool. You create the mindset and life that you desire within the constraints of your physical health as you figure out the answers that resonate with your authentic self...your TRUE self.

As you begin this process of self discovery and feel the resonation of peace and harmony within your true self then you are able to clearly decipher those who encourage, lift up and pour into you and those who may be a weight upon your shoulders.  When "spoons" (as we call them in the chronically ill community) or your preservation of time, health, energy and so forth are ever precious to us, we must be warriors over these areas now more than ever.  You are worthy of love, affirmation, encouraging words, edification and so much more.

The battle is much between lengthy doctor appointments, family commitments, personal needs, medical expenses, nutritional requirements and so forth.  Often times, it consumes the life of a chronically ill warrior to the point of a forgotten place of self love, self care or even a desire to do so.  If I may remind you today: you are brave, you are loved, you have a purpose, you can do wonderful things even while being disabled and living in the confines of your home.  You are MORE than a diagnosis or diagnoses on paper.  You have a choice to embrace those words on paper or to look at them and say, "Okay, thank you. Now, let me breath, gather my tools, my support system and let's formulate a plan of care AND of action so that I remain steady". The moment of doubt or fear might still come your way. It is most likely plausible; however, continuously surrounding yourself with those who see in you the worth, value, talent and beautiful masterpiece that you are until you see it in yourself will keep you going. It does and will bring HOPE! Hold onto Hope....Help Others Prosper Everyday!  In your Helping - often times -  you will wind up receiving as well.

Much love and stay encouraged! You are loved <3

All for love...Your Purpose, Your Truth!

8/31/2017

What’s your true Love?

I am asked time and time again about purpose. I often watch people go through life struggling to find their niche, "calling" and fulfill what they believe they are supposed to do.  Many times we breeze through our adolescent years and follow in the footsteps of our parents simply because that is what we know.  It is what we have been taught to do and "it" (be it walking into a trade, scholastic roles or even Motherhood, single-hood or carrying on a family business) feels comfortable to us. This may be what is expected of us and one was not given the option nor groomed or even coached in the area of walking in what is true to us.  Perhaps, you are fulfilling your purpose and those roles ARE  your truth. Congratulations to you if this is the case.  Even still, this writing is applicable for every single person.  You need not be chronically ill to gain wisdom here; however, having walked the path of one who has had to remember my own purpose,  I do believe that those who battle illness will find encouragement and hope wherever you are.

What do you love? When you think of that word "love" in its true sense, what makes you feel an overwhelming sense of joy, excitement, peace and brings you to a place where you cannot imagine being without it? What is the thing or action that you think of doing, creating or perpetuating every single day? What do you do, give, say, and hope for without ever longing for reciprocation in any fashion, praise, accolades, monetary gifts, or even status and celebrity? If no one knew your name and you could live out any dream and money, time, space and health were not a factor:  What brings a never-ending smile to your beautiful face? This is an exercise of “YES” in order for you to discover, find and hold onto your truth with great value before we even move onto the action phase! Here, there is always a blue sky. The "n'ts" are locked away until you feel a completed resonation of joy, fulfillment with visualization of your purpose mentally and physically as you receive what we call in the coaching world your "A-HA" moment!

Now, write this moment down.  Journal it. Whatever your "LOVE" is, this has now become your purpose. I fully understand that the "n'ts" will try to creep in.  Those are the "can'ts', "won’ts", "don'ts" and so forth. For those of us who battle chronic and incurable illness we will have to make some adjustments in order to fulfill our purpose.  We may have some uphill mountains to climb to keep our love going; however, it is “our” love right? It is the very thing that is our truth? It is our core being? It is who we are? We don't need praise for it, we don't need anyone to give us money, accolades, pat us on the back or beg us to do so?  Just like Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, our favorite kindergarten teacher, mentor, author or even our family member who may have inspired us through their own love we now have this fire within us, reignited, and we have passion! Yes, we will need a friend, support system or a cheerleader filled with compassion and wisdom to hold us up when we feel discouraged; however, with our truth (love aka purpose) now rediscovered we know we will find a way!

As a chronically ill woman, I have experienced tremendous turmoil in my life even prior to any debilitating illness. I have respectively experienced an exuberance of joy! Receiving multiple diagnoses was not what made this journey difficult.  It is only if and when I give into the thoughts that cross my mind that can conquer and destroy my ability to fulfill my purpose.  I allowed myself to give in to the "I can't" and "now what" for a time and succumbed to a deep depression with anxiety.  There were many circumstances that seemed to be surrounding me at once and I did not see how I could possibly give back.  I did not understand how going from a full time job, working out at the gym, teaching as a volunteer, singing on the weekends and pouring into my family to laying in bed or riding in ambulances had any value to anyone but to the pocket books of the insurance companies. I even put my pen down and stopped writing music. My piano sat without a tune to be played.  It was a dismal road and I literally watched my health decline rapidly the more I pined over what I thought were my "losses" as opposed to trying to adjust the vehicle to fulfilling my purpose.  I was a coach for crying out loud and for whatever reason I was wrapped in sorrow.  I knew I had to fight for me!

When I finally decided that I would go back to my truth; my love, then I worked harder than ever to pull out of that depression and anxiety.  Little did I know I would become a patient advocate and return to the truth of my childhood.  I am a giver, a teacher, a coach, a lover, an encourager, a forgiver, an uplifter, a cheerleader.  I am ME, all by myself.  The only difference is that I do these things from my bed or couch or even while sitting in doctor's offices.  Are you capturing the essence of the coaching goldmine here? In walking in my own truth, with merely an adjusted vehicle, I found many new family members and comrades along the way and so can you! You can sing, teach, blog, encourage, post, educate, affirm, inform, Youtube, craft, paint, advocate, change legislation and so much more even while chronically ill! You can even write a book and self publish nowadays! You can take up that platform for your child with special accommodations or that of a caretaker and truly effect change. The world is your oyster! Though we may need to take a break for days if you are migraine prone like me or weeks if you are in the hospital, that is alright.  We have an opportunity that some never get.  We are the CEO's of our own lives.  We get our choice to change our  vocation.  We, along with every healthy person, have the power to adjust our perspective and either get bitter or get better mentally, emotionally and spiritually!

Some roads are longer and other struggles are deeper than our own; however, that is where the love, our niche and our truth comes together quite marvelously.  When we are secure in walking (metaphorically) in who we are then we can unite with others who are, likewise, fulfilling their purpose and may reach thousands.  We can touch millions.  You can band together with others and form a cause, a platform and raise awareness far greater than one.  When you are living your love then this is not an issue for you because your deep passion to see others changed and filled with freedom is your driver.  Your own desires of need (accolades, praise and so forth) are placed on the backburner and you long for others to succeed; to become significant and that becomes a mission.  Your seed becomes greater than your own need.  You will find others asking to join you and you will become filled up without even asking.  Those around you with like minds and passion will essentially pour into you as your pour into yourself and the lives of others.  I’ve often thought of coining the phrase, “No Warrior Left UnLOVED”!

My hope for you is that you find your truth.  I long for every person to live out their LOVE so much so that if no one was ever watching, reciprocating or paying them back one, red cent that they would do it no matter what because of the sheer JOY that you feel simply for being YOU! Here's a little extra tip for free...if you ever find yourself feeling as if you're not praised enough, noticed enough, valued enough or repaid enough then you're not living your truth, purpose or the true love of your heart.  I am not saying that we shouldn't ever receive an "atta boy or girl" or "well done" or "hey YOU are AMAZING". The key is IF you never received it - would you still love it? That is your purpose.  Whatever that is? Do that and do it well.  It's your life,  You can always change your vehicle.  We love you - whoever you choose to be. The only one who should really make you proud of you, is you!

Abdominal Migraines and Migraines in Children

8/8/2017

We were recently contacted by a represented working with the Diamond Headache Clinic, the oldest and largest headache center, who put together a presentation about different types of migraine headaches and symptoms in children.

Children between the ages of 5 and 9 often experience abdominal headaches, which can develop into more severe headaches later in life. As many spoonies become diagnosed at a young age, we thought this could be a great resource for our community

We have included a hyperlink to the Diamond Headache Clinic within the first sentence above.  Many of those who battle Gastroparesis receive a diagnosis of abdominal migraines and / or migraines either before or during their diagnostic process.  Migraines are extremely debilitating and present in a myriad of ways.  The types of migraines differ but the general consensus is that migraines stem from a neurological disorder.

Thank you to the Diamond Headache Clinic for sharing this presentation and for allowing us to advocate in an area that effects patients within our community and beyond.

Warrior Wednesday Gastroparesis Awareness Month

Happy Warrior Wednesday!

August is, among many things, Gastroparesis Awareness Month.  Thanks to the effort of The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), Gastroparesis was awarded a place on the National Health Observance Calendar in 2016 for the month of August.  Organizations from the IFFGD, the AGMD, the GI Society (Canada), International Pain Foundation, HESA, WEGO Health, to a plethora of social media support groups of all types come together and advocate during our coveted month.  For those who battle the debilitating and incurable illness, we are ever thankful for the togetherness in advocacy and furthered awareness by other organizations this month as we aim to bring our Bill HR 1187 to the eyes of those who have never even heard of our disease.

What exactly IS Gastroparesis you might ask? I can say that I and our entire team lives with the effects of gastroparesis on varying levels.  Although we advocate through philanthropy for all chronic illnesses, it has been this common thread that initially brought us all together.  Gastroparesis means "paralysis of the stomach".  It is a digestive motility disorder in which the muscles, controlled by the vagus nerve do not contract properly therefore leaving food in the stomach rather than moving it into the intestinal tract at the normal rate.   Gastroparesis is patient specific.  Symptoms and treatment options vary and at this time, there is no cure. Due to the fact that the stomach emptying process is delayed, patients with gastroparesis can experience a host of symptoms from early satiety, abdominal pain, distention, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux and / or GERD and can even lead to more serious effects such as malnourishment, extreme weight loss, chronic fatigue syndrome and may require hospitalization.  The most common cause of gastroparesis is Diabetes; however, patients are often diagnosed with what is known as idiopathic gastroparesis, meaning there is no discovered reason or root for the development of the illness.  Some patients develop gastroparesis as a result of surgical complications, varying medications and even eating disorders.  Due to the varying stages of gastroparesis we see patients that are able to enjoy the pleasure of food while other patients succumb to a liquids diet. Others receive hydration and medication management via feeding tubes and total parenteral nutrition. While research centers are constantly observing patients and offering / participating in clinical trials, as stated above there is no known cure.

Won't you join us along with the millions of those across the globe who suffer with this debilitating illness and spread awareness for Gastroparesis? There are many ways to advocate.  You may search the hashtag #CureGP / #Green4GP 2 #CureGP for an event this August.  You may also search #Gastroparesis. Some wear green or yellow in support of those who suffer. You may participate in the GP Pie Face Challenge or donate to your non profit of choice.  Advocacy for our illness doesn't start or stop in August.  Awareness isn't for patient leaders or social media groups alone. There is a place for all.  Thank you for doing anything that you can to be a part this month, the next and in whatever way that you are able to bring change to the lives of those around you! #TogetherweFIGHTTogetherweWIN
